A Shorter Local Beat
Approximate Reading Time: 3 min 10 sec.
DJ Stevo could not make it to the show today, as he is in the great southern state of Alabama for the weekend, so he asked me to step in for him and hang out with Hand Banana on their show: the Local Beat which is every Friday from 5pm-8pm. Its not my first time sitting in on the Local Beat and I believe I am becoming some sort of a regular as I like to bust in and force my presence on everyone. I don't think they mind too much, so I appreciate that. What can I say, I love local music!
Nevertheless, I like to hang back a little bit during these interviews so I will cease to make this blog about me as much as possible. We were joined today by three members of two very groovy bands out of Durham. Elizabeth Eberhardt of Eberhardt and Rob Beloved and Eleni Binge of Beloved Binge.
They came in to promote their new albums and their "Triple CD Release Extravaganza" album release party Saturday night at the Duke Coffeehouse. The show starts at 9:30 and as always at the Duke Coffeehouse, its BYOB. Beloved Binge, Cantwell Gomez et Jordan, and Eberhadrt will be there, though Elizabeth will be playing solo and with some friends not in her band. After listening to only a few tracks from the albums I must say that they are all going to be excellent. In fact, Independence Weekly voted Cantwell Gomez et Jordan's album record of the month. The albums are as follows:
Cantwell Gomez et Jordan: Hot Licks and Retoric
Beloved Binge: Blender Theory
Eberhardt: The Curse
The show was rather short this week. We got started at 5:30 and had to end at 6:30 because of NC State Baseball. As usual on the Local Beat our subject of conversation ranged from anywhere of ecological books to peanut butter balls; Beloved Binge has a vegan recipe for some delicious peanut butter balls on their CD case (which was designed by Isabelle Eberhadrt). Off air we talked about tattoos, children, and how the AC doesn't work in our studio and it is always around 90 degrees. Overall, the interview went rather well and the music was excellent. I would like to apologize again for one of our faulty CD players that ended another song right in the middle, but what can you do.
Id also like to take this time to point out some interesting happenings that WKNC hopes to accomplish in the coming months. As Program Director I am adamant about taking our radio station even further in the direction of playing more local music and being even more involved in the Triangle community. Without revealing everything I will try to shed some light on cool things we are currently accomplishing. At the beginning of May we are going to add some more local music programs to our rotation, in the hopes of strengthening our ties with the bands in the area (which I will delve into later as the time gets closer). In addition to that, you hopefully are also going to begin seeing our merchandise in local retail stores in the coming weeks, and the exact locations I will reveal as that also begins to evolve. Our website is going to have some intense changes if things go to plan and we wish that it will become a sort of online community for all music lovers everywhere. We are going to start posting podcasts of all interviews (like the Local Beat) and begin covering the music scene more in-depth. I wish I could say more, as we are all excited about the path 88.1 is taking, but for the sake of getting people too worked up Ill pause for awhile and let those ideas begin to sink in. I hate to be vague and short, but you'll realize why in the closing month or two.
Now, after writing that uninteresting, grammatically brutal, ambiguous blog, I'm going to try to get to that Laura Reed & Deep Pocket interview again. No promises.
